CGA Player Residency: 2026, 18-Week Residency
Rugby Affiliation: University of Utah / USA Falcons 7s
Setting a Higher Bar
Zachary Maughan arrived at Rugby Park from the United States, where his rugby had taken shape through the University of Utah and USA Falcons 7s pathway. Coming into the Crusaders Global Academy Player Residency, he was looking for the kind of environment that would push him past what he could get away with at home, an 18-week stretch in Christchurch that would test him on and off the field and reset his sense of what a professional standard actually looks like.
That reset came quickly. Across on-field sessions, gym work, and daily life within the Academy, Zachary found himself immersed in a program where the level of every player around him, and the consistency demanded of every rep, was higher than anything he had experienced. It was not one dramatic session that changed him, he said, but the accumulated weight of eighteen weeks and thirteen sessions a week, a sustained standard that shaped him gradually and thoroughly.
What He Gained
Building the Habits of a High-Performance Player
Sharper hands, sharper decisions
Zachary points to his catch pass as the single biggest technical gain of his residency. It is a basic skill, he admits, but one drilled so often at Rugby Park that he came to see it as the most important skill in the entire game. Alongside it, he developed his tactical awareness, learning to read pictures in real time and run attack shapes with more confidence in his decision-making.
Standards that travel
Comparing the Crusaders Way to the rugby he grew up with, Zachary was struck by how much less players could get away with in New Zealand. Everyone around him operated at a higher level, and the little details mattered in a way they hadn't before. It's that culture of accountability, more than any single technique, that he plans to bring back to his own team, a refusal to let small things slide and an expectation that players hold themselves and each other responsible. He described the residency as exactly what he needed, a chance to dive in headfirst and commit fully, on the field, in the gym, and in every part of daily life.
A mindset built for the long run
The biggest surprise of the residency wasn't physical. It was realizing how much of high performance happens away from the field, in nutrition, sleep, mental preparation, and hours spent breaking down film. That shift in mindset, paired with the skills and standards he picked up in Christchurch, is what Zachary expects to carry furthest. He described the experience as one that will shape everything ahead of him in the game, calling the Academy the best possible environment to develop as both a player and a person.
