Detail Over Everything
Moos arrived at Rugby Park from Rugby Club t'Gooi in the Netherlands, where he also plays for the Netherlands U20 side, looking to test himself against a higher standard of rugby and sharpen the fundamentals of his game. Coming from a setup where the basics were often assumed rather than drilled, he wanted an environment that would push his skill execution as much as his physical conditioning.
That is exactly what he found. Across 18 weeks of on-field sessions, gym work, and match minutes, the Academy immersed him in a professional environment built around repetition and precision. He noticed the same emphasis on fundamentals in the Crusaders' own training that he saw in his own sessions, just delivered with a level of professionalism and consistency he had not experienced before.
What He Gained
Sharpening the Fundamentals
Rather than pointing to one drill or piece of feedback, Moos credits the cumulative effect of 18 weeks of training and matches for changing how he plays. Head coach Grant Keenan's constant emphasis on detail in the basic skills stuck with him most, reinforcing that even elite players never stop refining the fundamentals. He also came away surprised by how much the training load demanded off the field, learning firsthand how much nutrition and hydration matter in supporting that level of physical output.
Bringing Professionalism Home
Comparing the Crusaders Way to rugby back home, Moos pointed to professionalism as the biggest difference, the same basic skills work he was used to, but executed and reinforced at a much higher standard. The first thing he plans to bring back to Rugby Club t'Gooi is the confidence and comfort he built in his own skill set, along with the off-field preparation habits, nutrition and hydration included, that he developed during the residency.
A Renewed Commitment to the Game
Before arriving in Christchurch, Moos had been weighing whether to keep pursuing rugby at a high level. The residency changed that. Between the strength he built in the gym, the minutes he played on the field, and the added confidence in his own game, he now plans to continue his rugby journey. Off the field, he found the experience demanding but rewarding, summing it up simply: hard work, a lot of fun, and good mates made along the way.
