Immersed in the Crusaders Way

Huntley Masterton joined the Crusaders International Academy for an 8-week residency program, embracing the high-performance culture, disciplined training standards, and holistic player development that define the Crusaders legacy. Growing up watching the Crusaders compete at the highest level, Huntley arrived with a strong passion and respect for elite rugby. Through the residency, he experienced first-hand how the professional environment shapes both rugby ability and character.

The Residency: Structured Exposure to Elite Rugby

During his stay at Rugby Park, Christchurch, Huntley engaged in a comprehensive curriculum: technical and tactical field work, strength and conditioning, position-specific skill training, tactical breakdown sessions, game-analysis, plus weekly workshops on culture, leadership, mental skills, and preparation — all delivered under the “Crusaders Way” philosophy. The residency environment was immersive and demanding, challenging him daily on and off the field.

What He Gained: Growth On and Off the Pitch

  • Technical & Tactical Improvement: Over just 8 weeks, Huntley noted significant gains in his skill execution, decision-making under pressure, and overall rugby IQ.

  • Elevated Habits & Mindset: The program helped him internalize professional-level training habits, discipline, and accountability — shaping not just the athlete, but the person.

  • Broader Perspective & Confidence: Being immersed in a world-class environment deepened his understanding of rugby standards globally, giving him clarity, direction, and confidence for whatever path lies ahead.

  • Enduring Relationships & Memories: Beyond the training, Huntley left with lifelong friendships, rich experiences, and a lasting respect for elite performance culture.

Huntley’s reflection:

I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to have attended the Crusaders International Academy… I was amazed at the amount of improvement I saw in my game in just 8 weeks… Regardless of where my rugby career goes, I have left the Crusaders a better man, with new friends and memories I will cherish for a very long time.

Legacy & Next Steps

Huntley’s residency exemplifies how a short-term but immersive program can accelerate development and transform perspective — both as an athlete and as an individual. The experience has not only sharpened his rugby abilities, but also instilled values of excellence, selflessness, and continuous improvement. As Crusaders Global Academy continues to offer its Player Residency, Huntley’s journey serves as a powerful testament to the transformative impact of stepping into a professional environment and committing to growth.
